Evaluation Question 5- How did you attract/address your audience?

Some points to take from the interviews:

  • To target the wider audience we realised that we must include elements of comedy to interest audiences who may not be interested in the usp.
  • Also we realised that the names of the cast and crew would be an important element to attracting audiences.
  • It was clear that the target audience was to be met through location, so a lot of teens local to where the film is set would or should be interested in it, as they can relate.

EVALUATION Q.5 How did you attract/address your audience?

EVALUATION - Q6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Evaluation Question 4- Who would be the audience for your media product?

Here is the Facebook profile of our ideal target audience. a 16 year old boy from London who loves football. The film's USP of football allowed this target audience member to be identified, and because the film is also about teenage boys playing football in London, we believed that Daniel's factors would make him the ideal target audience.

Here is the Facebook profile of our wider audience. James is an older male from London who still loves football, however our USP for the wider audience is the style of the film, and the independent arthouse element that hopefully attracts the older film lovers, who also enjoy films and want to watch a fun, comedy film that they can still relate to.

EVALUATION Q.4 Who would be the audience for your media product?

Here is a screen shot from our research into who would be your audience for your media product, this is the typical spectator of the film Boyz n the hood based on a database of 77 people who watched the film to construct your average or typical spectator, as Boyz n the hood follows the same genre of being a teen film as our media product we are using their average audience as our typical audience.

Here is a Microsoft Powerpoint presentation which we embedded through slideshare which explains who would be our audience for our media product and answers many potential questions.

SKILLS DEVELOPEMENT EDITING

The editing stage is probably the most extensive in the amount of programmes and software used, so its of no surprise that I learned many skills during this phase. As well as learning how to use new programmes like Camtasia, I also learned how to use other programmes which I had been introduced to prior the editing stage to a greater depth, like Garage Band and Final cut. These programmes are very broad in what you can do within them, and there is a lot to learn to become an expert in one of these programmes so I was continually learning when working with both of these two programmes to  a greater extent to the knowledge I had prior the editing stage.

SKILLS DEVELOPEMENT FILMING

At the beginning of the academic year we had a lesson which demonstrated to us how to use the filming equipment. That lesson was roughly 6 months ago, so when it came to filming I was a bit rusty with the equipment, and during the few weeks of filming I was reminded by my group mates of how to use the filming equipment, for example I forgot how to clip the camera onto the tripod and how to re-watch the clips we had filmed, and both of these techniques were shown to me by my group mates during the filming sessions. We also had to use various shot types and angles and have an abstract view to envision the shots we would have while filming as explained to me by Oliver We also filmed various scenes again and again but with different shots such as close ups and extreme longshots just to ensure we have a vast variety of shot types so that we can determine which is the best shot type for the particular scene while editing.

Sunday 8 March 2015

Skills learnt in production.

This is the stage in which I learnt most of my skills in. During the production stage , filming various shot types and angles allowed our title sequence to look more professional. We filmed various scenes again and again but with different shots such as close ups and extreme longshots to show our understanding of the different shots. These skills may be highly useful in the future so learning them was quite useful. While editing , we used different programmes such as motion and final cut pro to improve the quality of our title sequence , we messed around with them to make sure we understand all the different tools. Finally , during the soundtrack , which was probably the longest stage of production due to the fact that there are hundreds of sounds to go through and trying to sync them to create a soundtrack was rather hard.

Skills learnt in research,

During the research stage , many skills and ideas were learnt and had major impacts with our title sequence. One of the skills was analysing the mise en scene , editing , sound and camera in different type of dramas. This skill was crucial in our title sequence because we had to know which shot types were good to use in our titles and how to use them. So , we had to decide what kind of drama we were doing , we picked a teen drama and then watched and analysed one which was 'Kidulthood'. This had a great influence on our title sequence as the whole story of our sequence is about a group of friends who have some differences and then argue. Further more , kidulthood also allowed us to figure out what type of attire we should include with our characters and the type of clothing they would wear. We also were able to see and decide which type of titles we should use , either animated , narrative etc.

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT PLANNING

during the planning stage I feel my skills really developed and it gave me an added impetus heading into the filming and editing stages. The main key skill I learned was to think outside the box and have a more creative mind-set. This was necessary as we didn't want our title-sequence to be to cliché and we wanted to stand out amongst the rest and sometimes a creative mentality makes the difference between a memorable title-sequence and an easily forgettable title-sequence. I also learned to be persistent as many of my ideas were written off by the teachers and my group mates as they were either to far-fetched or inappropriate for the title sequence, when you spend a lot of time trying to provide creative input and its rejected its often very frustrating and those are the moments when you have to be persistent and keep going.

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT RESEARCH

during the research stage I don't think I gained as  many skills as I could have as my attitude was rather lax and too casual. Despite my easy-going attitude towards the research phase I still believe I learned how to use time wisely and be time-efficient. I actually believe my careless approach helped me to gain this skill as I was always looking to cut corners and not waste any time, that when I did the research I didn't waste any time reading useless or unnecessary articles, and I could quickly detect whether the information I was attaining was relevant or not.

Friday 6th March

On the day of the deadline , two of us stayed back and added the finishing touches to our title sequence. Firstly , we had to make sure the titles are the same length , size and font , and we had to make sure they were 100% visible to our audience. Secondly ,  we were given more feedback from Louisa in which we were told that a certain title was blending with the background so we had to then change that. Thirdly , we then added the text bubbles to show what was being said on the phone between the characters. Lastly , we played the whole sequence again to see if there is any problems with the sequence, and then we saved and exported the file.

4th March - What we indend to do next lesson

On wednesday (next lesson) we intend to complete the soundtrack for the title sequence , we also need to act on all the feedback in which we received from  Dan  (see previous blog post). Which contained : Trimming down our title sequence ,  including more action scenes such as more football scenes and less texting scenes as that may bore the audience

Rough cut feed back 2 (From Dan)

After Dan viewed our rough cut we were told to decrease all the texting we had as due to the fact our title sequence is a football , we have to make the texting scenes smaller and increase actual footage of the football. Furhter more,we were also told to decrease the lenght of it as currently it is a 3minutes , so in order to do this we are going to cut or shorten the scenes as much as possible. In addition , some shots were way too far and narrow so we have to improve that. However he did say the various shots were used properly and effectivly.

MONDAY 1ST FEBRUARY 2015 UPDATE

Today we will continue to edit our title sequence following the advice we've received from Louisa.
We also plan to cut it down to around 2 minutes as its currently over 3 minutes by removing the scenes we feel are most unnecessary and unsuitable. We also plan to trim down some of our suitable scenes to make them more time efficient. We are also starting the production of our sound track as its a vital element of the title sequence and with the impending deadline of Friday 6th of March it had to commence today with the hope it will be completed by Wednesday the 8th of March.

Wednesday 25 February 2015

Rough cut 25.2.15

25th February

Before half term , we finished filming our title sequence and we began our first rough cut . So this lesson we are finishing the rough cut based on the feedback we received from Louisa  and continuing on our blogging. If today goes as planned , then next week we will include titles into our sequence and hopefully finish.

Rough Cut Feedback

After showing Louisa our first rough cut she gave us some points as feedback and how to go about improving our title sequence. These were:

  • Include some establishing shots at the beginning of the surrounding Shoreditch areas
  • Reduce the length of some of the shots, although they may not feel as long when text is being used
  • Add transitions between each of the sections to establish the change in the chapter.

Filming Review- 11th February

Today on the 11th we completed our production schedule and will now start our editing procedures. We filmed initially in the back streets of Islington and then in a park nearby. We filmed the sections with Darnell and Samuel as Michael and Terrance, and Andrew and Oliver worked behind the camera.

Monday 9 February 2015

Filming Progress

The first two filming sessions were successful filming 2 of the 3 key scenes, with the third to be completed on Wednesday the 11th of February. We also feel that the costume choices were very successful as they suited the image we were trying to create. Our location also suited our needs as we had exclusive access to the football pitch and to Oliver's house so we weren't once interrupted with the exception of the weather. As a result of the good location choices and costume choices we don't need to reshoot anything and are on-course to complete filming by Wednesday the 11th of February.

Samuel Individual input. 4th Feb

On the 4th Feb we went to Oliver's  house to film his part of the title sequence which was him sleeping and awaking due to the sound of his phone as her was late to meet Andrew. There were various of repeated shots from different shot angles e.g from the floor and stairs.

Oliver Blogging feedback

Here are some notes from my latest blogging health check on the the 1st February.
  • I was told to make some more blogs on how the production went and if we stuck with our original production schedule.
  • I also need to post a production diary detailing exactly what we shot including pictures and other updates from the production.
  • Also I was told to upload some other evidence from the filming of shots that I was proud of etc. and I am going to do this soon.

Our Storyboard

Oliver- Individual input: 4th February

On the 4th of Feb, in the day of filming at my house I was mainly in front of the camera as we were filming my section of the title sequence, however  I did help the others with setting up the shots, but it was hard to help set up shots and be acting in it at the same time.

Wednesday 4th February review

On wednesday the 4th of February we filmed all of the shots needed for Dan's (Oliver) section of the title sequence at Oliver's house in Leytonstone.  We feel as though production went very well this day as we managed to get all of the shots from our shot list, and after reviewing we are so happy with what we have produced from this day's filming.

Our Twitter Page

As part of our title sequence we have created a twitter page in order to generate awareness for the film. Our twitter handle is @ChemistryFilm and we have posted updates on the production process, including pictures of our locations and cast in action.

Monday 2 February 2015

Wednesday 4th February Filming Expectations

On Wednesday 4th of February we expect to meet at Oliver's house in Leytonstone at 9 : 15 am. While in Oliver's home we will film the scene of Oliver  texting and receiving messages from the character of James. After we've finished filming for this scene we're going to film Darnell and Samuel's scene on the bus in Leytonstone and on the streets of Leyton and possibly Hackney.

Wednesday 28th January filming review

On the morning of wednesday the 28th of january we began filming our title sequence at Powerleague in Shoreditch where would would film Andrew's football sequences. I would class this day of filming as pretty successful, however there were some slight problems we had to deal with. A major issue was the weather that we had to deal with, because midway through filming we had to postpone filming for a while whilst we waited for the heavy rain to pass. Although reviewing the footage we are very happy with what we have produced, and we got some very good shots of Andrew playing football, however I felt as though some more establishing shots of the surrounding urban areas would be needed, which we hope to film on wednesday the 4th of february.

Task4 - Analyse two title sequences

Two Lane Blacktop (1971):
In this film , the first title you see is the film name which is 'Two Lane Blacktop''.

Then you see the different characters and the characters they are playing in the film. E.g. James Taylor as 'The Driver'

Then we see the photographic advisor.

After that we see who created the story and the screen play.

Then we see the producer , director .

Behind the credits , it looks like there is a car driving up the road which may indicate the film has many things to do with a moving car. The music is kind of old and sounds like a journey is taking place.

Scream Bacula Scream (1973):
As soon as the film starts you see a man who could be named as a 'Vampire' sucking a young females blood froM her neck.

Then the film name is introduced ''Scream Bacula Scream''

Then we see the characters in the film e.g 'Pam Grier''

Then it shows the director of the film , the editors and the post production.

Then the creator of the music played in the background and then the executive producer.

After that the screenplay and who created the story is introduced.

Then the producer and director.

Finally you see the 'base' of the film which is the house.

The sequence is an animation.

Task 7 - Analysing title sequence of favourite film.

KIDULTHOOD

Title Sequence Order:
Production Companies:
Revolver Entertainment
Hanway Films

Director:
MENHAJ HUDA

Actors:
Aml Ameen
Red Madrell
Noel Clarke
Adam Deacon
Jaime Winstone
Femi Oyeniran.

Wrritten by Noal Clarke.

Film Name  : Kidulthood.

At the start of the title sequence , the producer uses a simple way to mention the credits which is using simple plain text. in the opening sequence all the main characters are introduced , not clearly but you can tell they're the main characters as the camera is facing them making eye contact which one another and showing they all have a certain bond with each other , whether good or bad. Further more , from the opening you can tell it is a teen drama as the opening was based in a school playground with teens playing football and making out. You can also outline the 'Cool' kids really easily due to the mise en scene (Clothing and Posture) of the teens. You can also tell the same thing for the females with the odd short tie and the top button of the shirt unbuttoned.

Pitch feedback

The feedback from our pitch was generally good, however Louisa thought that it would be hard to film on the bus and so we're contemplating whether or not to keep or remove the bus scene, also Louisa said that we needed a soundtrack as without dialect and a soundtrack the title sequence would be very flat and needs a soundtrack which Darnell is in the process of creating through Garage Band, and should be completed by the 28th of January

Presentation of pitch.

Production Schedule

Wednesday 28/1/15

Were meeting up at Shoreditch station at 9 and we'll walk to the shoreditch Power league by quarter past nine where we'll film the majority of our title sequence. Time permitting we may also film part of the bus scene, however if we cannot do this due to time restriction we'll complete the bus scene by wednesday 4th of February

Monday 2/2/15

On Monday the second of February we will film Oliver's scene at his house where well meet up in lesson at 3 : 05 and will make the journey together to Oliver's house in Leytonstone, were well filming  the scene of Oliver at his house which should take no longer than 30 minutes.

Wednesday 4/2/15

On the 4th of February we'll be meeting at college at 9 where we'll either film the remainder of the bus scene or start on the bus scene depending on where we got to on the 28th, either way we expect to have completed the bus scene by the 4th of February.

Font ideas

Here are just a few font inspirations for the type of font we will use for the film's title credits. We are aiming to go for big, bold and strong, to represent the urban values of this youth drama. The boldness represents the danger, and the strong story line. Also the target audience for this films would be younger males, and these fonts represent our target audience in order to market it towards them easier.

Location

Here are some images of the powerleague where we will be shooting our title sequence

My Costumes

feedback from Dan.

''I'd put you on a low C/D grade as there's a lot of posts that you've missed out and some of the things you've posted are lacking in detail. Please make the effort to catch up! Also, I note that you've made *no* individual posts - I'd recommend that you both get cracking with some individual analysis of title sequences - two from Art of the Tile sequence, and a technical analysis from a favourite film. '

I Agree and the 3 targets I set my self are:
1.Attend workshops to catch up and ask for help.
2.Complete blogging work in DETAIL.
3.Stop being lazy.

Wednesday 7 January 2015

LOCATIONS AND PROPS

we will start the filming in Shoreditch park and from the side roads around it where you will see the protagonists journey from his home to football practice and his problems along the way. We have chosen Shoreditch as its an urban area and represents the struggles young people go through.

Football practice will be held at Power league in Shoreditch where we plan on booking a pitch. We have chosen power league because there are a vast range of outdoor pitches which create a urban yet professional  feel.

Our main props will be a football for the protagonist to represent his talent and love for the sport.
We will also use cigarettes and lighters which will be used by Darnell and Samuel to show their delinquency.

COSTUME IDEAS

As a young footballer, our protagonist of the title sequence will be dressed in football training gear.
This footballer has a bright future, and has all the right boots, and all the good training gear. For example:

The two boys who are stalking the footballer will be wearing more casual and urban clothing. One will be wearing a matching black adidas tracksuit and one will be wearing jeans and a hoody.

Order of title credits!

There are many variations to how opening credits can be done, but here is the common order to opening title credits of a film!

Different film types may vary from this structure, but this is the typical order!

How To Use Garage Band.- Darnell

1.Firstly when you open up garageband, you'll have to select a project. As a media student we are doing movies, so we should select either movies or loops.
2. Once you have selected the project you would like to use, drag  the movie clip you want to use into the middle, you should have a screen like this.

3. Delete the movies audio file, then drag sounds from garage band, to find the files click the little loop button at the bottom and your screen should appear like this.

4.Drag your selected files into the middle to create a soundscape, to view your soundscape with to movie title press the little black screen on your dragged movie. Once you've pressed that your screen should appear like this.

5. Once you have finished your soundscape click 'file' and then click save, once you have saved your piece you then want to export it so you can use it as a file. You then click 'share' and then 'Export movie to disk' however once you select it make sure it says in the box 'expert setting'.

How To Use Garage Band

1- To create a sound track for a movie, when you open garage band you must select either 'loops' or 'movie' as the new project type.

2-If you have the movie or the footage then you should import it now and lay the track on top of it.

3-Once in garage band, you need to select the sounds, instruments and types of music you want to add to the track. You do this through the finder, by selecting the instrument, the mood and other categories to find the perfect sound.

4- Once you've found the sounds you want, you drag it onto the time line and adjust how long you want the loop to be from there. You can adjust the volume, and the length of the loop. You can add multiple layers to create a sound scape for the film!

how to use garage band

How To Use Garage Band

1. First you open up garage band by clicking on the guitar at the bottom of the screen before clicking on either movie or loop. we chose movie as we were playing our music over the movie 10 things i hate about you

2. After this you open up the film from finder before dragging it into the slot on garage band which says drag movie here

3. After you've done this you should delete the movie sound by clicking on the track of movie sound and then clicking on the back space button to remove it.

4. after you've removed the movie sound you can add music and foley effects by clicking on loop at the bottom right which will open up a range of sounds from musical instruments to foley effects.

5.Then click on the desired sound at the top right which will open up a range of different choices for each particular category of sound i.e guitar, piano, foley effects.

6.As it opens up in the bottom right corner you can select the specific sound by clicking on it which will play the noise so that you can experiment with the options  to decide which option you want.

7.once you've decide upon which specific sound you want you can drag it into the space below the film at the top.

8. once you've collected a range of noises you can adjust the volume of each by dragging the volume bar on the left down or up  to a suitable volume, however above 0 decibels is not recommended as the music begins to distort.

Some first ideas

Here are some ideas that we have brainstormed for our final title sequence coursework:

Football idea:

Our first idea was to have a young footballer, who was destined for big things, with amazing skill and natural ability, but the one thing holding him back was his past of when he was attacked. This history held him back both physically and mentally. He couldn't kick a ball the same anymore, and he was mentally scarred by the events. The end of the title sequence ends when he finally rockets a free kick into the top corner. In the title sequence we see his struggle on the pitch, and flash backs of the event that holds him back.

An extension and alternative idea to the flashbacks is that the footballer mugs someone, who was bullying him and accidentally kills him on his way home, as he's extremely poor and has anger problems.

We think our film would be produced and distributed by a film company like film 4, or 'Fierce Productions" a smaller independent film company, as it is not a mainstream film.

Target Audience Research

TARGET AUDIENCE RESEARCH

We found that a lot of people like  watching teen films , Also that all age groups like teen films. However we found that as the age increases the sub genre changes. For example younger teens prefer high school teen films i.e Mean Girls or Grease and the older teens prefer to watch teen dramas i.e Boyz N The Hood or My Brother The Devil. Teen Films does not really have a specific audience because our research shows all ages watch teen film even if its with their kids, friends or on their own.

Editing Our Title Sequence

Blogging task 20- Kevin & Perry Go Large

The teen film I have chosen is Kevin & Perry Go Large, a youth drama!

Opening Credits (In order they appear):
  • ICON
  • Tiger Aspect Pictures
  • Kevin & Perry Go Large
These very small title credits, that only show the 2 main film companies involved show how the film was not made by a large conglomerate, but was an independent film.

In this film's opening, we are introduced to Kevin and the themes of his teenage life, how he faces oppression and control from his parents, and his desire for the opposite sex and his dreams and fantasies which could be representative of the ambition of teenagers. Pop culture of the times is also introduced through the music they play as DJ's, the clothes they wear, and the icons on the posters on Kevin's wall.

We are introduced to Kevin and Perry as the two protagonists as two adolescents who don't want live under the control of school or parents and just want to go on a holiday! The main stereotypical social groups that we are introduced to in the opening of this film are teenagers, and middle class parents. The middle class parents are represented as stereotypically well spoken, well dressed, living in a nice home, and then the teenagers, speaking colloquially and dressed in more contemporary clothing.

Kevin and Perry interact with Kevin's parents in a very conflicting manner through out the film, and this is expected, as this film is very much a coming of age film, and the parents are seen to be a barrier in between the boys becoming adults.

The majority of camera shots used are close ups and mid shots of the two boys and the people they're interacting with, also there are lots of tracking shots used, and these type of shots allow the audience to follow the two boys and their story's closely. To go with this, the editing used is continuous for the majority of the time, however there are instances when jump cuts or fast paced editing is used to show either the fantasies of the boys and what they're thinking in their head, or showing them partying in Ibiza and living their dream.

The mise en scene used throughout the film constantly shows the popular culture of the late 1990's and early 2000's, this is through mainly costume, as the DJ's, and Kevin and Perry, and the clubbers are all wearing contemporary clothing, and hats that teenagers and modern people would be wearing at the time.

I think that this film is an extremely good example of a teen film and a youth drama, as it shows so many obstacles that teenage boys face, including girls, authority, and trying to achieve what they want to do, not what authority expects of them. I loved this film, as in the end it all does work out really for the boys, and they do more or less come of age! They get the girls and have success as DJ's! So I thought that this was a great example of a teen film.

Blogging task 6- Categorizing title sequences

My favourite title sequence from the ones above is from Pulp Fiction, this is because I feel even though its only titles on still images, and some animation, the music that is used along side it really sets the tone for the film to come. which is why I find it my favourite.
